President, Sophia University

On October 6th and 7th, 2022, for the first time in three years, Japan-Mexico Rectors’ Summit will be held in person at Sophia University. Bringing together rectors and scholars of all expertise and aspirations from all parts of Japan and Mexico here in Tokyo is a unique opportunity to further promote the development of the Japan-Mexico relationship. As the host institution, we are delighted to be able to provide an opportunity to confirm the bonds of friendship between our two countries and to create new opportunities for collaboration and cooperation.

The theme of the 2022 Summit is “Global Risks and Universities,” and in these days when not only Covid-19 but also various global risks are emerging, educational institutions are expected to conduct advanced research and develop human resources through high quality education in order to resolve these issues. Last year, an online pre-event was held due to the pandemic, which was attended by many rectors and university officials, allowing lively discussion. Ambassador to Japan Ms. Melba PRÍA, Embassy of Mexico in Japan noted that the Mexico-Japan Summit “is an innovative opportunity to further develop the four centuries of friendship between the two countries and to solve every challenge that may arise,” and showed great expectations for the outcome of the conference. At a time of change, in which the role of universities is being questioned, the opportunity for rectors and presidents of universities to meet and discuss could be a new means of promoting cooperation between Mexican and Japanese universities to address or find solutions to issues.

We are preparing ourselves to make this meeting even more fruitful and to welcome you all in the best possible manner. We look forward to seeing you in Japan in October.
